If you've ever driven past Old Frisco Trail on a quiet morning and noticed people out there walking, you might have wondered what keeps them coming back. The answer, for a lot of folks around here, is simple: it works.
Over the years, we've heard from so many members of our community who say that walking Old Frisco Trail has genuinely changed their lives. People who struggled with their weight, their energy levels, or just needed a place to decompress have found that showing up consistently made all the difference.
One of the biggest reasons they kept coming back? It's free, it's accessible, and it doesn't feel intimidating the way walking into a gym for the first time can.
The Research Backs It Up
The science supports what our community has been experiencing firsthand. Trails reduce barriers to physical activity like cost, access, and convenience, and the benefits of regular physical activity include reducing the risk of diabetes, obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular disease, as well as improving muscle tone, flexibility, and immune health.
The CDC recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, which works out to just 30 minutes a day, five days a week. A regular walk on the trail is one of the easiest ways to hit that goal without overhauling your entire routine.
A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that people living within a mile of walking infrastructure averaged 45 more minutes of exercise per week after trails were built in their area. Simply having a trail nearby is enough to get people moving more.
