Our Roots Run Deep & Along Dirt Trails
In 1995, the Lake Wister Association (LWA) was given a few routes and many miles of trails in Leflore county through the Rails to Trails conservancy program. Our most publicly loved trail is Old Frisco Trail which runs from Poteau to Wister. We're currently working on a grant project from the Oklahoma Forestry Department to open a new trail that runs from Panama to Bokoshe—the PBR Trail.

Trails have a HUGE POSITIVE IMPACT on our Communities

Recreation Space for Activities and Health
The trails have provided a safe and free place for people to get active and take control of their health They're also great for kids to ride bikes and for people to walk dogs without worrying about cars.

Greenspace for Mental Health
Spending time in nature can lead to decreased heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. It's also been show they can help reduce psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety.

Trails Boost Local Economies
Well kept and new trails attract outdoor enthusiasts who can help boost a small town's economy when they visit. They can also increase property value for nearby home and land owners.

Planting & Protecting
TREES
At LWA, we are committed to protecting and preserving the natural beauty surrounding our trails for the entire Leflore County community to enjoy. With the support of Oklahoma Forestry Services grants, we have been actively working to restore and reforest the land along our trails, with the help of incredible community volunteers. These efforts help provide shade, reduce erosion, and improve air quality for everyone who visits. We are proud of the progress we have made and excited about what is still ahead as we continue to grow and protect the natural environment around our trails.
